ECPM is in Morocco for a Parliamentary Regional Round Table

On 24 April 2019, the Network of Parliamentarians against the Death Penalty in Morocco is organizing, with the support of the Moroccan Organisation for Human Rights and ECPM, a Regional Parliamentary Round Table in Rabat. The purpose of this meeting is to highlight the key role of parliamentarians in moving towards the abolition of the death penalty or in promoting progress in the field of human rights. It is involved in the joint project: “Accompanying civil society and political actors towards a step-by-step abolition of the death penalty” and in partnership with the Moroccan Coalition against the Death Penalty.

Among the main topics of the day:

– the reality of the death penalty in the Maghreb and the horizon for cooperation

– the role and means of parliamentarians in moving towards the abolition of the death penalty

– sharing experiences on initiatives to move towards abolition in Morocco and other countries in the region

Reminder : The Maghreb states have a de facto moratorium. The death penalty is in force, but no executions have been carried out for more than 10 years. Thus, Algeria and Morocco have been under a de facto moratorium since 1993, Mauritania since 1987 and Tunisia since 1991.
