World Congress: registration is open

You can now register online for the 5th World Congress Against the Death Penalty –a simple, free and mandatory process to take part in the leading international abolitionist event.
Since 2001, the World Congress organized by ECPM in partnership with the World Coalition Against the Death Penalty has been established as the main meeting point for abolitionists.
After Strasburg in 2001, Montréal in 2004, Paris in 2007 and Geneva in 2010, the 5th World Congress will take place in Madrid between June 12-15, 2013 at the invitation of the Spanish government and with sponsorship from the Norwegian, Swiss and French governments.
More than 1,500 participants from 90 countries on five continents are expected in Madrid, from civil society activists to politicians and lawyers, they will develop strategies to support abolition in the coming years.
Political and cultural leaders
The academic programme features two geographical plenary sessions dedicated to the new frontiers of the abolitionist struggle, in Asia and in the Middle East/North Africa region. The Congress will also host eleven round table discussions and eight workshops.
Official opening and closing ceremonies will constitute a platform for numerous political and cultural leaders to act as spokespeople for abolition before international journalists.
Alongside the debates, the World Congress will also feature artistic displays and campaigning action. Those events favour direct exchanges between abolitionists and made previous World Congresses a success.
Although constant progress has marked the past few decades, many challenges remain. New perspectives open for abolitionists and fresh strategies are needed to tackle the last retentionist pockets.
