Algeria: Mokhtar Belmokhtar facing the Death Penalty

Sunday January 22nd, the prosecutor of the Criminal court of Alger called for capital punishment against one of the leading Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) emir, Mokhtar Belmokhtar.

Currently on the run, he is prosecuted, with 9 others AQIM members, for “affiliation with a terrorist organization, carrying activities both inside and outside Algeria”, for “murder with premeditation and ambush”; as they are involved in several kidnapping and murder of two Algerian soldiers in May 2012.
